When you love model trains (or model cars) you MUST visit the “Miniatur Wunderland” whenever you are in Hamburg, Germany. Opened in 2001, it is now the biggest model train of the world. It now covers an area of 1,500 m². The total length of all rails is now more than 15 kms (in scale 1/87, which is equivalent to more than 1,300 km “in reality”).
The “Miniatur Wunderland” is divided into various sections, showing sceneries from various countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and Scandinavia.
There are currently more than 1,000 trains with over 10,000 wagons, 4,000 houses, 9,000 cars etc. In short: it’s just incredible. But it is constantly growing and should be finished in 2028 – 28 years after they started to build it!
Please see here some detail videos I took at my last visit in March, 2018:
Since many years, the “Miniatur Wunderland” is Hamburg’s most visited tourist sight. I already visited it twice: In November, 2009 and in March, 2018 – and of course I cannot wait to visit it again!
Please allocate a lot of budget when you visit it. Not because it is so expensive, but they also offer a lot of model cars, trucks, tractors etc. in scale H0 (1/87) for incredible prices!
